A Local Model with National Implications

EduFlex1 has launched a flagship initiative with Club Crown Heights in Oceanside, California. This neighborhood after-school program serves dozens of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, nearly 80% of whom are reading two to three years below grade level.

We call this initiative a Reading ICU (Intensive Care Unit): an emergency, science-based intervention that targets struggling readers before they enter middle school. Why? Because research is clear:

  • If a child can’t read at grade level by 4th grade, they are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
  • In California, where reading scores rank among the lowest in the nation, the cost of inaction is devastating — lost diplomas, lost opportunities, and lost futures.

Club Crown Heights is not a “one-and-done” project. It is a model for how community-based programs can partner with schools and nonprofits like EduFlex1 to reverse a life trajectory and restore the science of reading to the students who need it most.

Why We Use Corrective Reading™

Evidence-Based Literacy

At EduFlex1, we don’t gamble with children’s futures by using trendy or unproven methods.

Instead, we use Corrective Reading™, a proven, research-based curriculum designed by Siegfried Engelmann and supported by decades of evidence.

This program directly targets literacy gaps through structured instruction, building strong foundational reading skills that last.

How Corrective Reading™ Works

Corrective Reading™ teaches the five pillars of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

It delivers consistent, structured lessons that prevent students from slipping through the cracks and has been validated by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Every lesson aligns with the Science of Reading and promotes measurable, lasting progress.

Real Results for Real Students

Unlike expensive tutoring franchises or canned digital apps, Corrective Reading™ gives students what they need most — skilled teachers, explicit instruction, and real progress.

At Club Crown Heights, our trained educators guide small groups through 65 focused lessons, helping students gain years of reading growth in just months — turning struggle into confidence and preparing them for middle school success.

Why EduFlex1 Stands Apart

EduFlex1 is a nonprofit, mission-driven program — not a for-profit franchise. That means no franchise fees, no national advertising, and no profit margins.

Every dollar goes directly toward instruction, teacher training, and learning materials. Our programs are built on community partnerships, not corporate contracts.

Rooted in the Science of Reading

EduFlex1 brings proven, evidence-based literacy instruction to underserved communities. We use data-driven progress monitoring with placement and mastery tests every 10 lessons.

By focusing on 4th to 6th graders — those most at risk of middle school failure — we create measurable, lasting change in reading outcomes.

Building a Future Together

Club Crown Heights serves as our demonstration site, showcasing the EduFlex1 model in action. We’re expanding across San Diego County and beyond to reach more students in need.

Every child we help stay in school gains a diploma, a career, and a stronger community for all.
